Canadian journalists overwhelmingly seed themselves as monitors of political and business interests, and resist an identity of supporters of government policy, according to a new research note published by the Canadian Communication Association. These findings are drawn from data collected as part of the Canadian Worlds of Journalism Study (WJS), which explores how journalists orient themselves in their professional work and the extent to which various influences impact their journalistic practices.
While the data suggests that Canadian journalists are unlikely to feel that they are influenced by political or business interests, it appears they do feel their work is heavily influenced by the availability of resources (or lack thereof) as well as by the legal and ethical constraints that dictate aspects of their work.
